The Art Club of McKinney, founded in 1914 in McKinney, Texas, was created to encourage the appreciation of visual art in the community. Nearly 100 years later, the club continues to support this goal with:
- monthly meetings for members and visitors
- lectures on art topics
- demonstrations and workshops of various media and techniques
- art shows for adults and children
- organized visits to museums and gallery exhibits
- field trips to “paint outside the gallery”
- directory of local artists
- online gallery for art club members

the Heard-Craig Gallery, 306 North Church Street, McKinney, Texas, on the 2nd Thursday of each month, August through May. The business meeting starts at 9:30 am and the program starts at 10 am.
The program generally includes a presentation/demo by a visiting artist and, after a brief lunch break, a workshop taught by the visiting artist.
Light refreshments and time to socialize are available at the beginning, middle, and/or end of each meeting.
Each artist is invited to bring a piece of their work for members to enjoy and vote on. The winner receives a gift certificate and is featured on this page.

Yumie Hirano Visits McKinney
The Art Club will have a very special presentation Thursday Jan. 20, 2011, 6:00 - 9:30 pm at
the Heard-Craig Gallery, 306 North Church Street, McKinney, Texas.
At this special meeting, Yumie will teach us about Japanese culture, including the Japanese tea ceremony and origami, where we'll fold some origami designs and perhaps even learn to make her specialty, tiny paper crane earrings, to symbolize peace.
Yumie will be here for six weeks as a volunteer ambassador for the Never Again Campaign, a people-to-people program begun in 1985 at Berkshire Community College in Massachusetts. This program chooses a handful of Japanese visitors annually to come to the US and share their perspective about the A-Bomb, peace, and Japanese culture.

Art Club member Lynne Weinberger met Yumie in the summer of 2009, when her family took a two-week trip to Japan. One of the cities they visited was Hiroshima, and Lynne was told before the trip that visiting that city would "change her life." She had no idea how prophetic that statement would prove to be.
Japan has a wonderful organization called the Volunteer Guide Service. In any city, if you email your arrival date and sightseeing request in advance, a volunteer (often a retiree, housewife or student eager to practice their English) will meet you in their city and show you the sights for a day - free. Visitors are asked to simply reimburse the guide's travel expense (a small fare for the subway or train) and pay for their lunch.
Lynn and her family were fortunate that Yumie was to be their volunteer guide in Hiroshima. She is a regular guide at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum, and she has extensive knowledge of history and current events...not only Japan's but of the United States, too. Yumie also teaches Japanese language to foreigners, and has had students from around the world.

The Heard-Craig House, built in 1900, is one of the most beautifully preserved historic homes in North Texas, which is always decorated beautifully for the season.
The house contains breathtaking stained glass, original furnishings, personal belongings, family heirlooms, and art collected by the Heard and Craig families.
Also, if you wish, participate in the White Elephant Exchange. Bring a "white elephant" gift, some artsy item you have been wanting to get rid of but couldn't bring yourself to throw away. Wrap it up prettily and we'll draw numbers to take a gift from the pile (or take something you like better from another person).
Congratulations to the Asel Mini Art Show winners at November's meeting of the Art Club.
